We are still needing a director for Bible School this year.  Please prayerfully consider if this is something you might be interested in doing.  Jane Coleman is willing to help get you going and also Susan Gibson and Kathy Deckard.  Many children that come, are only exposed to Christianity that one week a year and we feel that this one of our most important ministries that we do.

We also want to remind everyone that May 11th our confirmation class will be taken into church.  This is always a special day in the life of the church and the communicants life.

May 18th will be our graduating Sr. Recognition, Teacher Recognition,  and Promotion Sun.  This is also an important event in the life of any church.  We want all these people to know how very important to all of us.
Please keep these dates in mind.

“Hear Ye!  Hear Ye!!”

Our Christian Education Committee has talked for a long time about expanding our Sunday School offerings to include a second adult Sunday School class. With the recent completion of the balcony project we now have the space we need to offer such a class, and with “Joe” Pease recently joining the membership of our congregation we now have an individual who is eager to offer our members and friends just such an opportunity.

Have you ever said…..

  • “How does each part of the Bible fit into the whole?”

  • “I read the Bible but don’t always understand it.”

  • “I know what the Bible says, but don’t always know what it means.”

  • “How can I believe what I do not really know?”

  • “Why is the Bible written the way it is and how does it fit together?”

  • “How does the Bible apply to my life today?”

Starting on Sunday, September 16, he will meet in the Board Room with those who are interested in seeking the person of Jesus Christ as He is revealed in the first five books of the Old Testament (the Pentateuch) together with the four Gospel accounts and Paul’s Letter to the Romans. Jesus is the God of creation and world history. Jesus is also a loving and caring God who ultimately became part of creation for the benefit of people who were made in His image and need to know the love and care of God in their lives.

This class in intended to be a help to anyone (long time Christian or new to the faith) who wants to know not only how the Bible is organized, but how the major themes of the Bible are threaded throughout the Old and New Testaments. At the core of this class you will find an emphasis on prayer, and how prayer, together with reading, opens the door to the presence of the Holy Spirit. This is important, because, it is the Holy Spirit who helps us recognize and understand the Truths contained in the Bible.

Teaching will grow from the words of the Bible in combination with Henrietta Mears Book What the Bible is all About. Plan on having lots of FUN as you grow closer to Christ learn to apply what is revealed to your life.

2007-2008 Sunday School Classes

Adult Sunday School Class
By Lois M. Campbell

During this past year, the Adult Sunday School Class has completed a number of study series including:  Teaching Peace Through Isaiah, Unplug the Christmas Machine, and God Calls Leaders. The latest series for Lent is a study of the Lord’s Prayer, called, Lord, Teach Us to Pray.  This study and the previous study on Leaders comes from the Kerygma program. Kerygma is a Greek word.  [Greek kêrugma, preaching, proclamation, from kêrux, kêrug-, herald.].   Originally it meant the proclamation of a herald who brought the news of the day, or a government official who made state announcements.   The early Christian church gave the Greek word a new meaning, and in the New Testament the word Kerygma is used to indicate the content of the message announced by the church.  Kerygma has since been variously translated as "proclamation" or "preaching" or "word proclaimed."  The Kerygma Program uses the word Kerygma as the early church did, and also to indicate the whole biblical message, the gospel that is found both in the Old Testament and New Testament.  The Program has taken Kerygma for its name because it seeks to support congregations in their reading and hearing "The Word" from back then to us here and now.   Join us as we explore the whole biblical message found with the Lord’s Prayer.  Please, join us at any time during this series – we would be happy to see you there!

Senior High Class
Greetings and Salutations from the Senior High Sunday School Class,

This year we have a much smaller group, as three of our members graduated and went off to college in the fall.  We have between one and five members from week to week, so as you can imagine, we are a pretty tight group.  We do not have a formal curriculum that we follow.  I like to have a lesson and discussion when there are enough people to participate, but when we have a smaller group we listen to music and sometimes watch an episode of Joan of Arcadia.

We are a very informal group, and are open to any new ideas or discussion topics!  I encourage my students to bring a topic or song with them every week.  Similar to the “Out of the Blue Box,” I never know what I am going to get, but so far it has always worked out and we all walk away having learned something about each other.  Mostly, we listen to music and relate it to the every day life of a Christian.  We have listened to everything from Garth Brooks and Tim McGraw to Bob Dillon, Nickleback, The Doors, and Aretha Franklin.  My students are all very musical, and I am not so this is a learning experience for me every week.  Sometimes, we like to talk and learn about current events and discuss many of the problems facing young adults these days, including but not limited to, politics, environment, drugs, music, television, books, movies, video games, cutting, suicide, and media propaganda.

I am blessed to have a very eclectic and intelligent group of young people who challenge and stimulate me every day, but most importantly they make me laugh!  We relate as much as possible to the Bible and encourage open and honest communication!  I get some of my ideas from random books in my own collection such as Dogma:  Life Lessons for Dog Lovers, A Life God Rewards for Teens, The Journey is more than the Destination, Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul and Chicken Soup for the Christian teenage Soul.  Also, we discuss topics found in the youth ministries magazine “Group.”

As you may remember, being a teenager is a very difficult time.  In this class we have only one rule, and that rule is to respect each other. We do not pass judgment, and try always to actively listen with an open mind and an open heart. We love visitors and would be happy if you came to join us!  Stop in sometime, you are always welcome!

God Bless
Hillary Basden

Junior High Sunday School Class

Location:  Up the east stairway to the balcony, and the first room on the left.
Teacher:   Jon Grimes

Have you ever wondered what the differences are between the four Gospels?  The Jr. Hi Class has been learning about the way each of the Gospels’ authors wrote about the ministry of Jesus.  They wrote to different groups of people in their day in order to convince each group that Jesus is the Messiah.

Matthew wrote to the Jews, Mark to the Romans, Luke to the Greeks, and John to anyone who would listen and believe.  The Gospels open, in Matthew, with the genealogy of Jesus the Christ, a descendent of David, and close with the Gospel of John portraying Jesus as God.

We welcome and encourage all Junior High students to come join us as we learn what the Gospels tell us about the Christ who came to walk among us, touch us, and make us whole.

Welcome to the Fourth and Fifth Grade Class

Hello Everyone!
The 4th and 5th grade class is tiny but mighty this year! I am hopeful that we might grow in size, so please send your 4th and 5th graders to Sunday school! We have started the year out in the book of Exodus and we have been learning about Moses. We have talked about the importance of following directions and the consequences that Moses had to endure when he choose to not follow God’s directions. The class learned that Moses felt that he could not do what God wanted him to do but that God would help him and be with him through out his tasks. We discussed that God is also there for us today and will help us to do the things that we sometimes feel we cannot do. We have made hand pictures (hand shakes are often used when making a promise) to remind us that God always keeps his promises. God kept his word when he brought down the plagues on the Egyptians and when he freed the Israelites after 430 years in Egypt! Last week we spent time talking about how the Hebrew people must have felt when they found themselves trapped between the Egyptian army and the Red sea. The fear and hopelessness they must have experienced. How difficult it is to have faith during desperate times. Our memory verse was; Faith is being certain of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. Hebrews 11:1 We made cards of encouragement to give to someone that we know who made be having a difficult or troubling time. We will continue on in the book of Exodus for the next few lessons and then we will start another unit.
Well that’s it so far this year. Please know that I feel blessed to be able to spend Sunday mornings with your beautiful children, it is truly an honor. The holidays will soon be upon us and I wish that the fall/winter season finds you all healthy and happy. It is good to praise the Lord and make music to your name, O Most High. Psalm 92:1
Peace, Love and Light
Becki Sprague

Welcome to the 2nd and 3rd grade class!!

Grades 2 & 3 are learning the stories found in Exodus. Class starts with an activity that relates true life situations to the Bible story of the day. The Bible story follows with a fun activity to reinforce the message. Rhythm instruments are often used to make memorizing the Bible verse fun. Stop by and visit the little room with the big message.

Welcome to the Preschool, Kindergarten and 1st grade class!!

We are an energetic, sharp bunch studying the works of Jesus.  So far this year we have learned that "Jesus knows all about us" - a lesson from John 1:43-49.  And friends can tell each other about Jesus. Philip followed Jesus as a disciple, and then Philip told his friend Nathanael about Jesus.  When Jesus met Nathanael, Jesus knew all about him.   Nathanael was surprised!!

Our second Sunday, we talked about times when we need help and when we don't.  "Jesus can help us when we ask."  John 4:46-54.  A sick boy's father asked Jesus to heal his son.  And Jesus did heal the son!!  These are just one of many stories we will talk about this year.  We make story books, play with animals, cut papers out and color.  We will learn more about believing
in Jesus, Jesus' healing, and showing love to others. Drop on by anytime and be prepared to be busy!!

Yours in Christ,
Jane Coleman

A place for you

How much do you know about the Bible? Or Christian history? Or different ways of praying? Or Christian stewardship? Or Christian theology? Do you even know why most — but not all — Christians worship on Sundays?

The point is, no matter what your age, there is much to learn from classes offered at the church. If you are interested in learning about a certain religious topic, speak to the pastor.

Look for the smile which breaks forth on the pastor’s face. Why? Because an educated congregation thrills pastors. Learning is part of loving God with one’s mind. Christian education helps us understand what living as Christians is all about. So go ahead, ask about a class that might interest you.

“It is not enough to have a good mind,” said the French philosopher, René Descartes. “The main thing is to use it well.” Learning about Christian beliefs and practices is using one’s mind quite well. Your church is a place for you to learn. It has a class for you.
