 A place for you

How much do you know about the Bible? Or Christian history? Or different ways of praying? Or Christian stewardship? Or Christian theology? Do you even know why most — but not all — Christians worship on Sundays?

The point is, no matter what your age, there is much to learn from classes offered at the church. If you are interested in learning about a certain religious topic, speak to the pastor.

Look for the smile which breaks forth on the pastor’s face. Why? Because an educated congregation thrills pastors. Learning is part of loving God with one’s mind. Christian education helps us understand what living as Christians is all about. So go ahead, ask about a class that might interest you.

“It is not enough to have a good mind,” said the French philosopher, René Descartes. “The main thing is to use it well.” Learning about Christian beliefs and practices is using one’s mind quite well. Your church is a place for you to learn. It has a class for you.

Staying in the Word Together

Click here to follow along with Scripture for the year

Join Christians throughout North America as they read together – each Sunday – the scriptures for the week.  Known as the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL), the collections of readings is organized so that after a three year cycle, members of churches will have read through the majority of the Bible.  In our church, our Sunday school curriculum follows the RCL.

As a church and denomination, we use the RCL and provide these to the pastors for direction on the order of worship and for guidance in Christian Education. A guest pastor may choose not to use the scriptures, but we are providing them to the congregation as a means of Staying in the Word Together.  Traditionally, there will be an Old Testament, Psalm New Testament and Gospel reading.

Pre-school - 4th

This year things are a little different with elementary S.S.  We have one class for pre-K to 4th grade.  Suzanne & Betsy  teach on a rotational basis.  This semester, we have focused most of our attention on the teachings of Christ.  With a classroom of varying ages & abilities, we are trying to put a lot of what we  learn into practice right in the school room.  We hope that the kids learn to work together as a team, maximizing each other’s strengths & minimizing each others weaknesses for the glory of God.  We have one “guest” helper in our room .... Susan Clawson.  She is Alex's Grandmother.  We are thankful for her willingness to jump in and help when we need it
& some days we really seem to need it!  On Easter Sunday, during Blue Box time, the kids discussed a little about what they knew of the day's celebration.  Little things they said make us aware that even during the days that it seems like we may not be getting the point across--it
is getting across.  This is when we smile & re-energize for teaching again -- and especially thank God for the power of the Holy Spirit:  We would love to have you come join us!

The Hebrews History, the Torah, the Old Testament

Who is God?  Is God someone in the sky with a long white robe and beard?  Did God sit down and draw plans for the universe or did God think it up and then just do it?  Did God make us in His own physical or spiritual image?  There’s so much to think about.  As our class travels through Genesis, we’ve discussed these questions about God.

Continuing on our journey through the book of Genesis, we’ve talked about Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, Methuselah, Noah and the rainbow with a promise, and the Tower of Babel with all the confusion.  We’re now learning about the life and times of Father Abraham, the first of the three patriarchs, and his covenant with God.  God had a plan for Abraham, Sarah, and Hagar.  In addition to God’s plan, their stories also include the importance of birthright and the culture of the people in that area.  It has been very interesting learning the lifestyles of the people we read about so often, and it multiplies the lessons we can learn from their stories.

In the end, the lives and lessons we learn from Genesis are not only God’s plan, but the beginning of God’s plan.  It is a testament that the Old Testament is still teaching us to trust in God even after thousands of years.  The heroes and heroines of the Bible trust in God.  We should too.

Sr. High Class

Our Senior High Sunday School class has a diverse group of people and discussion topics each week.  We do not currently follow any one curriculum. Rather, we discuss current events and how we see God working in our lives, our church, our schools and our community.  We sometimes use the Wired Word series to lead our discussions, and sometimes we use various devotionals.  From the outside looking in we may appear to be a disorganized group, but truly we are the people of God trying to be the hands and feet of God.  We strive to be authentic Christians and to live our faith out loud.  We have a variety of teachers who help, including Jane Coleman and myself as well as Joe Pease and Becki Sprague.  We continue to lift up each other and our church as well.  If you have a free Sunday, we invite you to join us and see what our teenagers are up to…… I think you will be pleasantly surprised.  Our kids are thoughtful and kind and generous with their time, talents and money.  These kids are a pleasure to be around.  They will challenge you and frustrate you at times but mostly they will make you smile and laugh.  These kids are a blessing to me, to this church and to this community.  Take a minute to get to know one of them...the Senior High School Class AWESOME.

CHURCH NURSERY

We have a nursery available every Sunday during church for infants through and including kindergarten age children.  We need to limit it to those age groups because of limited space and volunteers for the nursery.

If you would like to volunteer to stay in the nursery,  you may sign up on the sheet posted in the parlor or contact  Judy M. Ryan.

There will be a list of volunteer guidelines posted in the nursery.

Thanks so much for your cooperation and help with this ministry.

CEMETERY WALK 2011

On Sunday morning, September 18, we gathered at the Dayton Cemetery to meet nine characters who were former members of our community and were connected to our church.

1.   Susan Clawson, as Vella McBride, wife of Dr. William McBride
 2.   Tori Rosa, as Kittie Carnahan, daughter of Father Carnahan
3.   Matthew Campbell, as Capt. Charles Elliott
4.   Bethany Grimes, as Grace Levandowski
5.   Brian Sprague, as Dr. David Crouse
6.   Steve and Cathy Hancook, as Samuel and Elizabeth Favorite, visiting their infants
7.   Nathan Hill, as William J. Snoddy
8.   Mike Grimes, as Thomas Toole

All these participants, through their costumes and stories, made these characters come alive creating a living snapshot of our church’s past.

Thanks to David Coleman for recording this event with our church’s camera.

A big WELL DONE good and faithful servants.
