Lenten Lessons

Beginning on Sunday, February 26 at 7 p.m. through March, 18, Pastor Justin will be leading a series of discussions about the final days of Jesus based on the book  Jesus, the Final Days; What Really Happened by Craig A. Evans and N.T. Wright. As one reviewer wrote, “This small book contains a wealth of information about the resurrection. Evans and Wright, both famous biblical scholars, have aimed it at the general reader, not the scholar, so it's accessible and entertaining.” If you would like a book ordered for you for just $3.75, please call Darlene at the church office by February 17 and one will be ordered for you.

More about the book from the back cover:

What do history and archaeology have to say about Jesus death, burial, and resurrection? In this superb book, two of the world's most celebrated writers on the historical Jesus share their greatest findings. Together, Craig A. Evans and N. T. Wright concisely and compellingly debunk popular myths about the historical Jesus and convey the true, world-shattering significance of Jesus' final days on earth.

LUM JUBILEE CHRISTMAS  Dec. 10, 2011

“In response to all he has done for us, let us outdo each other in being helpful and kind to each other and in doing good. “   Hebrews 10:24

LUM Jubilee Christmas is our community's largest Christmas assistance program.  One Saturday each December, LUM member churches become Jubilee Toy Shops where low-income parents can select new toys, clothing, and gift certificates for their children.  Jubilee spreads the joy of the season in a way that supports the strength of the family unit and the dignity of parents.  Jubilee serves over 600 families and over 1700 children.  Monetary contributions as well as donations of new toys and clothing, plus the help of over 1,000 volunteers make the annual Jubilee Christmas possible.   Please consider how you can help with Jubilee 2011.

“For if you give, you will get! Your gift will return to you in full and over flowing measure, pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, and running over.  Whatever measure you use to give-large or small-will be used to measure what is given back to you.”   Luke 6:38

Commissioned Ruling Elder Graduation  Nov. 12, 2011

by Rev. Frank Vardeman, General Presbyter

Last Saturday afternoon about 150 Presbyterians from the Synod of Lincoln Trails gathered at the Philo Presbyterian Church in Philo, Illinois for the Graduation Worship Service for the Synod's 2011 Commissioned Ruling Elder graduates. Ten Ruling Elders graduated with seven of the ten from the Presbytery of Wabash Valley.

PWV was well represented in the worship service as the Rev Laura Reason was the preacher, the Rev. Bill McLean and the Rev. Carol McDonald participated. Our seven graduates are:

  • David Abbott, Westminster PC, South Bend
  • Nancy Brinklow, The Presbyterian Church, LaPorte
  • Jill Kitowski, The Presbyterian Church, LaPorte
  • Harry Pearce, Pulaski Presbyterian Church, Pulaski
  • Joe Pease, Memorial Presbyterian Church, Dayton
  • Steven Varys, Faith Presbyterian Church, West Lafayette
  • Donald Yowell, First Presbyterian Church, Crown Point
We owe these new leaders in our presbytery a vote of congratulations and gratitude for their hard work and faithful service.

The service itself was robust and moving. Hymn singing was tremendous. The graduating Elders gave each other stoles and spoke briefly about one another and their faith journey. Laura Reason preached the Gospel and she and Carol McDonald celebrated the Lord's Supper as the service drew to a close. The final hymn was a stirring rendition of "The Summons" from the Iona Coummunity.

Family members, friends and fellow congregants made up the congregation and it was a great day for all.

Coloring Ministry

A Coloring Ministry is beginning at Memorial Presbyterian Church! The Coloring Ministry is a time for people to gather and color and cut out pictures of characters from popular children’s stories. These pictures will be made into puppets by being laminated and placed on popsicle sticks for teachers and preschool children to use at the Ben & Maxine Miller Child Development Laboratory School at Purdue. Our first meeting will be Monday, March 5 at 11 a.m. This ministry will initially meet once a month, but may later meet more frequently in the future.
